For some types of teeth there’s a limit to the degree of whiteness that can be achieved through bleaching. In some cases the color of the dentin forming the interior of the tooth is naturally more yellow.  It is then impossible to get a pure white smile, no matter the intensity and effectiveness of the whitening treatment. Porcelain veneers offer an alternative of choice to whiten your smile.

Dental porcelain veneers and dental crowns are known to fix the look of juxtaposing natural teeth, the alignment being corrected by the addition of porcelain veneers.  Securely fastened these added facets are durable and as strong as natural teeth. When traditional whitening methods don’t bring the desired result, more and more dentists offer the dental porcelain veneers and porcelain crowns as an alternative to improve the whiteness of teeth.

There are many benefits to porcelain veneers and cosmetic add-ons:

• veneers and add-ons are ideal to cover worn out enamel. The enamel layer deteriorates over time, especially because of overly acid foods and beverages, mastication and abrasion.  Porcelain veneers can be used to hide the wear and deterioration. Why not take the opportunity to whiten your smile?

• Porcelain veneers being highly resistant to wear you will enjoy a beautiful smile longer.  With age the deterioration of our natural teeth often force us to have them extracted and resolve to wear a dental prosthesis.  Porcelain veneers can postpone the necessity or even avoid it in some cases. .

• Porcelain veneers can eliminate some problems of grinding teeth and correct the abnormal spacing between the teeth.

Porcelain veneers however, are not necessarily recommended for everyone. For minor teeth problems a composite filling can also be used at a lower cost. If the teeth are slightly cracked or chipped, the solution of using composite resin can be a more affordable choice.  In that case the dentist will target only the area of the tooth that needs repair.

Dental veneers and porcelain crowns are recommended if the teeth are damaged or discolored, or if you wish to have a whiter smile but a bleaching treatment is not an option.  When the work is well done the application of dental veneers and porcelain crowns can last for years and requires minimal maintenance.  The enamel of the tooth is protected from further damage. A dental crown will also prevent tooth decay.

Porcelain veneers or dental crowns don’t mean you no longer have to care for your teeth.  The porcelain can be damaged just as the natural tooth. The veneers and crowns are relatively thin. And that’s okay because you do not want to feel them in our mouth. They need to be forgotten! Because of their frailty however, the dentist may recommend avoiding certain types of food.

For peoples with extensively damaged teeth the dentist can also recommend dental implants. The dental implant is in fact a complete tooth, made of porcelain or composite material, which is fixed on a support screwed into the bone. Dental surgery is needed to fix the screws and it is a dental surgeon who will carry out the intervention. Dentist and dental surgeon will often work together to give you a beautiful smile. In all respect dental implants are visually similar to natural teeth, and no one will see the difference. When working on you dental implant, the dentist may suggest to take advantage to offer to whiten your smile by choosing implants whiter than your natural teeth. The remaining teeth can then be bleached to harmonize the whole. If all teeth are replaced by dental implants then the issue of whitening does not arise. Beautiful very white teeth are installed throughout the mouth. Dental implants are much more aesthetically pleasing and comfortable than traditional dentures. They are also more hygienic than dentures or semi-prosthesis. Dental implants can be quite expensive however.

Whether you chose porcelain veneers, dental crowns or implants, for utilitarian purpose or aesthetic reasons, the dentist is your best advisor. Discuss the options with him/her.  Teeth whitening treatment, porcelain veneers or implants, your dentist knows them all and will suggest the technique best suited to your need.  Whitening your teeth using porcelain veneers is an interesting option to bring back you shining smile!  But whatever your choice; never forget to take care of your teeth!
